Brokers and suppliers play an important role in Iowa alcohol operations. The Iowa Department of Revenue (Department) is responsible for controlling the importation of all alcoholic liquor to be sold in the state of Iowa. Suppliers and the brokers representing them are responsible for getting their products into Iowa by following all Iowa laws and listing requirements. Suppliers are the final decision makers of what liquor products are available for sale within the state.
“Broker” means a person who represents or promotes alcoholic liquor within the state on behalf of the holder of a distiller’s certificate of compliance, a manufacturer’s license, or a class “A” native distilled spirits license. An employee of the holder of a distiller’s certificate of compliance, a manufacturer’s license, or a class “A” native distilled spirits license is not a broker. Iowa Code chapter 123.3(9)
“Supplier” means a manufacturer, distiller, or importer of alcoholic liquors or native distilled spirits shipping, selling, or having such alcoholic beverages brought into this state for resale by the department. Iowa Administrative Code 701–1001.1
