Why is the Iowa Department of Revenue sending this letter?
We want to protect you and your identity. This is a safeguard to prevent someone from using your identity to file a false tax return.
Why was the return selected for additional review?
The Department received an Iowa Individual Income Tax Return, filed with your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). In order to protect your identity, we are requiring you to verify your information to ensure that you are the individual who filed this return.
What should you do if you received an Identity Verification letter?
Respond to your identity verification letter on GovConnectIowa within 45 days of the date on the letter:
Follow the specific instructions in your letter to verify your identity.
What should you do if you did not file this return?
- Go to GovConnectIowa at govconnect.iowa.gov
- Click the Verify My Identity link under the Individuals panel
- Enter the one-time password listed on the letter
- Enter the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN
- Select βI did not file this returnβ
- Enter your contact information
- Submit the request
What should you do if you did not verify your identity by the due date?
Mail a letter, including:
- Your daytime phone number
- Your refund or tax due amount (if you filed)
- A copy of the Identity Verification letter
